Weekend Read: Fish Oil Supplements A Double-Edged Sword for Heart Health?
Too much of a good thing can mask the essence of its beauty.
This article relates to the previous one entitled, “The Fat Truth - How Unsaturated Fatty Acids Can Lead to Healthy Aging”. Where we discuss the dietary sources of healthy fats that can increase our longevity. Today, we're going to talk about something you might have read about in that article- omega-3 fatty acids. These are special nutrients that we usually get from eating fish or taking fish oil pills. Many people take these pills because they are thought to be good for our hearts.
But, did you know that too much of a good thing can sometimes be not so good? That's what some scientists found out about these fish oil pills. They did a big study, where they looked at a lot of other studies that had been done before. This method of research is called a meta-analysis. They wanted to see if taking these fish oil pills for a long time could affect our hearts in a way we didn't expect.
They found out that people who took a lot of these pills, more than what we usually take in a day, had a higher chance of getting a heart problem called atrial fibrillation. This is a fancy name for when your heart doesn't beat the way it should. It's like when you're trying to keep a beat with a drum, but you keep missing the rhythm. Atrial fibrillation is a common type of irregular heartbeat that can lead to blood clots, stroke, heart failure, and other heart-related complications. It's a condition that affects millions of people worldwide, and its prevalence is expected to increase as our population ages.
This is a significant finding because omega-3 supplements are widely used for their potential heart health benefits. They are known to reduce inflammation, lower blood pressure, and decrease triglyceride levels, all of which are beneficial for heart health. However, this new research suggests that these supplements may also have a downside.
Now, this doesn't mean that fish oil pills are bad. They can still be good for your heart. But, like with all things, it's important not to have too much. It's like ice cream - a little bit is delicious and can make us happy, but eating too much can give us a tummy ache.
If you're taking fish oil pills, don't worry! Just remember, it's always important to talk to your doctor before starting or stopping any medicine. They can help you understand what's best for you.
So, what's the big lesson here? Balance is key! Eating a variety of healthy foods, getting plenty of exercise, and seeing your doctor regularly is the best way to keep your heart happy and healthy. And remember, just like you're learning new things every day, so are doctors and scientists. We're all in this together, learning how to take the best care of our hearts!

The research was from Baris Gencer, MD with the title: Effect of Long-Term Marine Omega-3 Fatty Acids Supplementation on the Risk of Atrial Fibrillation in Randomized Controlled Trials of Cardiovascular Outcomes: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
Are we DHA/EPA deficient?
Taking this is too risky. :( the risk of bleeding, stroke, immunologic issues, mercury intoxication (some brands that dont prepare it properly) etc out weighs the "possible" benefits of fish oil.
I dont recommend taking it.
